Meet Flamengo's new fitness coach
Toninho Oliveira talks about his expectations and his return to Gávea after five years
By From the team at Flamengo's official website - inToninho Oliveira is Flamengo's new fitness coach and will be tasked with getting the team flying in the second half of 2010. Experienced, Toninho has worked for major Brazilian clubs such as Corinthians, Guarani, São Paulo, Botafogo, Vasco, Cruzeiro, and Flamengo twice before this one. And five years after his last stint, he arrives at the club dreaming of more success.
In 1999, when he first wore the Flamengo jersey, he was part of a team that made history with numerous titles (three rounds of state championships, three Carioca championships, the Mercosul Cup, and the Champions' Cup). He returned in 2005, but had little time to work during a difficult year for the Red-Blacks. This time, he arrives with 30 days to implement his philosophy and ensure the team's physical performance on the field.
In an exclusive interview with Flamengo's official website, he spoke about the new challenge at Gávea, revealed his work methods and, like the entire coaching staff, stated that Ninho do Urubu should be a priority to provide greater quality to the activities carried out with the red-black group.

Return to Flamengo - This is my third time working at Flamengo, and I'm thrilled to be back. I've grown to love it here, and I'm thrilled to have the club's doors open to me once again. This is a sign I've done a good job.
Methodology - My work is 90% done with the ball. Ever since I was a player, I've always thought about focusing my physical activities this way. And whenever I've had enough time to work with a quality squad, thank God, I've achieved good results. I hope to repeat that here at Flamengo.
Interseason in Itu - The advantage isn't taking it away from Rio de Janeiro, but rather providing a better structure and a bit more control over the players. Because nutrition and rest are regulated. That's important.
Time to train – I've never had so much time to train at any club I've ever been to. Having 30 working days to work is great. I'm sure this will be crucial for the group.
TC - A well-structured training center is essential for all of us, and I believe that this will soon no longer be a problem at Flamengo. I believe that by the end of the year, Ninho do Urubu will have better working conditions, and this will be excellent for the group.
Pressure - For me, this pressure isn't a problem. I won't say I'm used to it, but I know that football demands results at any club. Of course, at Flamengo and Corinthians, everything has a bigger dimension, but I've worked at both and, most importantly, I know the atmosphere here at Flamengo. I know the employees, I know the way they work, and I arrive very happy.
Cast - The players have to believe in the work. There's no secret or magic formula. The important thing is to instill confidence in the group and ensure they enjoy the work and give their all. We know the squad needs some reinforcements, which is normal, but the board will work to bring them in as soon as possible.
