Red-and-black ambassador in RS: "distance and longing strengthen ties with the team"

On Sunday (July 20.07), Flamengo will take to the field in Rio Grande do Sul against Internacional in the 11th round of the Brazilian Championship. Despite the distance from Rio de Janeiro, the Mais Querido will have the support of its fans, especially those from Rio Grande do Sul, who are always present when Flamengo tours the south of the country. Walter de Oliveira Monteiro is one such example.
A fan member, club advisor, and Flamengo ambassador in Rio Grande do Sul, Walter still remembers the first time he was at Maracanã, even though he was only five years old. It was 1972, and Doval was bringing joy to the Biggest Fanbase in the World. "Even though I was very young, I remember a few things about that match. It was my first time at the stadium to see Flamengo, and my debut was against Botafogo. We won that game 2-1, but what caught my attention most was the atmosphere of the fans. The drums, the chants... It all enchanted me," said the fan.
A native of Rio de Janeiro, Walter moved to Porto Alegre seven years ago. Interestingly, his relationship with the Red-Blacks grew even stronger with distance, deepening his bond. Feeling compelled to bring Flamengo fans from Rio Grande do Sul closer together, the fan club member created a space for the Red-Blacks to gather and watch the games of their favorite team. "We're very passionate. The distance and the longing for Flamengo strengthen our bonds with the team. We try to simulate a stadium atmosphere in the bar where we watch, acting as if we were in the stands to feel closer," he said.
The son of Flamengo fans, Walter credits his family, especially his father, for his continued support for Flamengo. A fan of Doval, Zico, and Petkovic, the ambassador to Rio Grande do Sul says he's passionate enough to travel across the country to watch the club, and claims he does it all as a hobby, like therapy.
In addition to being an ambassador and advisor, Walter was one of the club's first fan members, and praises the Red-Black Nation program"It's a very successful case. In a very short time, we've gained many members, focused solely on their passion for the club. We all have to understand that it's this passion that drives Flamengo. I participate in promotions whenever I can, and I see how much we've evolved with the program," he said.
In Porto Alegre, this Sunday, against Internacional, Red-and-black fans from the region will have free access to the Beira-Rio stadium to support the Most Beloved. Walter will be there because no matter where, his passion will be with Flamengo
