Emotion at Mass for former coach Cláudio Coutinho
Friends and former athletes paid tribute to one of the greatest names in the history of the red-black team

Honor is given to those who deserve honor. With this in mind, Flamengo held a mass this Monday (November 28.11th) at 17 p.m. at the São Judas Tadeu Chapel in Gávea, honoring Cláudio Coutinho, the club's great coach, responsible for 16 titles in two years and three months, and owner of the impressive 75,06% success rate during the five years he was in charge of the Rubro-Negro football team. Coutinho passed away 30 years ago, on November 27th, 1981, while diving in the Cagarras Islands, in Rio de Janeiro.
The ceremony was attended by the club's President Patrícia Amorim, the vice-president of Social and Fla-Gávea Luis Claudio Cotta, the president of the board of directors Maurício Gomes de Mattos, the president of the fiscal council Leonardo Ribeiro, the vice-president of institutional relations Walter Oaquim, the director of historical heritage Mauro Chaves and the director of youth football Carlos Noval.
Paulo César Coutinho, director of external relations and son of Claudio Coutinho, also attended and was moved, alongside his wife, Daniela Amorim, his sons Thomaz César and Cláudio, his sister Cláudia Coutinho and his nephew Gabriel, by the affection shown by the club's board.
"It's a great honor for my father to be remembered with such affection and consideration even after so long since his death. Patrícia is very special and only she could remember and pay this tribute," he thanked.
The president returned the thanks and stated that, despite no longer being present, Coutinho remains alive in the club's day-to-day activities.
"He was a role model not only in football but in all sports. And he continues to be. Flamengo recognizes his presence here to this day. Claudio Coutinho was a role model. This was our way of thanking him and conveying our affection to his family," he said, re-inaugurating the plaque bearing the former coach's name, which gives its name to the club's artistic gymnastics gymnasium.
Several former players who had the opportunity to work with one of the greatest coaches of all time were present at the tribute to the former coach. Adílio, Júlio César "Uri Gueller," Andrade, Manguito, and Carlos Alberto spoke, with tears in their eyes, of the professor they considered a friend.
"In my history as a player, I had two truly special people. Cláudio was one of them. When I came from Belém do Pará, from a small team, he believed in me and put me on that team of all stars. To me, he was a friend, a father. Extremely polite, I couldn't stay mad at him, not even when he left me out of the '78 squad," said Júlio César.
Cláudio Pecego de Moraes Coutinho was in charge of Flamengo's football team from 1976 to 1977 and from 1978 to 1980, playing 266 games. Born in Rio Grande do Sul under Dom Pedrito, he won the State Championships in 78 and 79 and the Brazilian Championship in 80. Born on January 5, 1939, he died at the age of 42.
