In a message sent to Clube de Regatas do Flamengo, FIFA president Joseph Blatter sends condolences for the death of Zé Carlos, Flamengo's goalkeeper during part of the 80s and 90s. "It is with sadness that I write to you today [the message is addressed to the club's licensed president, Marcio Braga], having learned of the tragic passing of Zé Carlos," says Blatter at the beginning of the letter, dated July 28.

In addition to expressing his condolences to the club, the president of the sport's governing body also asks, "on behalf of FIFA and the football family worldwide, to convey our condolences to Zé Carlos' family and friends. Please let them know that the football community is with them today. We hope that, in some small way, our words of support can help bring a little peace and comfort in this time of sadness."
