After signing Ronaldinho Gaúcho's image contract on the 9th, Flamengo reviewed the initiatives involving the star in 2011 and found impressive results, according to the licensed companies themselves. Three products were launched on the market, and all were well received, creating very positive expectations for 2012.
Responsible for manufacturing Ronaldinho Gaúcho's personalized towels, Bouton/Buettner revealed that the image of the red-and-black number 10 alone sells more than other major clubs in the Brasileirão's Serie A, which are also licensed by the company.
"We are very pleased with the license, with the sales, and with the milestone of over 30 units sold in five months. To give you an idea of how significant this is, we have licenses from other major Brazilian clubs, and Ronaldinho alone surpasses some of them," said Sérgio Lombardi, commercial director of Bouton Indústria e Comércio, recalling the club's pioneering spirit.
"The product is innovative in the Brazilian market, and no other club has the image of their idol printed on towels, despite this being very common in the European market. It's incredible how fans take the towels to the stadiums, use them as flags, and place them on their balconies."
Gustavo Alvarenga, commercial director at Brandão e Malzoni, also recognized the power of the Flamengo/Ronaldinho brand. His company licensed exclusive bracelets featuring the star and sold 3,000 units in four months.
"It's an extremely significant number compared to any other player and other clubs. The strength of Flamengo and Ronaldinho is impressive and increases our bargaining power with retailers. We expect to sell 17 units in the coming weeks and are very happy with the product," he explained.
Ronaldinho Gaúcho dolls, also released in 2011, have already sold over six thousand units, according to Tot Toys. Three other Ronaldinho Gaúcho-branded products have already been approved and are about to be released: video game controllers, flip-flops, and backpacks.
A promising 2012
Following the results, and with Ronaldinho's image rights now exclusively tied to the club, Flamengo hopes to significantly increase the supply of Ronaldinho-branded products in the Brazilian market. To this end, as announced in early February, it has already begun talks with the club's number 10 staff to approve licensing for these products.
The meeting between the parties is expected to take place soon and at least five companies have already submitted proposals for the licensing of more than 25 products, from various segments, ranging from toys to shirts.
