Fla will honor Stuart Angel with a statue
In partnership with the federal government, the red-black team unveils a work of art this Thursday

Student Stuart Angel, killed by the military regime, will be honored this Thursday (9), in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), in an event promoted by the Clube de Regatas do Flamengo and the Human Rights Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic (SDH/PR). The activity will feature the participation of rowers from the Club, where Stuart practiced several sports, having even won the Rio de Janeiro Rowing Championship twice, in 1964 and 1965.
Minister Paulo Vannuchi of the SDH/PR, club president Patricia Amorim, and journalist Hildegard Angel, Stuart's sister, will participate in the event, which will consist of the inauguration of the "Indispensable People" memorial in honor of the young man. The initiative is part of the SDH/PR's Right to Memory and Truth project, which aims to tell the story of the victims of the last period of dictatorship in Brazil, retracing the trajectories of workers, students, professionals, and peasants who joined left-wing organizations to fight the military regime.
During the activity, the rowers of Flamengo—where Stuart was a two-time Rio de Janeiro champion—will greet the guests. Twelve athletes will be lined up, oars in hand, in a formation used only on special occasions.
The tribute initiative is the result of a partnership between SDH/PR, Clube de Regatas do Flamengo, Centro Acadêmico Stuart Angel Jones and the Free Agency for Information, Citizenship and Education.
Biography – Stuart Edgar Angel Jones is the son of Zuleika (Zuzu) Angel Jones and Norman Angel Jones. Born in Salvador on January 11, 1945, Stuart was an economics student at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and an activist in the October 8 Revolutionary Movement (MR-8). He was passionate about sports: he played tennis, swimming, capoeira, and weightlifting. He excelled at rowing, having been a captain on the Oito, the Luxury Transatlantic, and winning the Rio de Janeiro state championship with Flamengo in 1964 and 1965.
Stuart was arrested on the morning of May 14, 1971, in Grajaú, near Avenida 28 de Setembro, by agents of the Aeronautics Information and Security Center (CISA).
The circumstances of his death, under barbaric torture, were narrated, in a letter to Zuzu Angel, by the political prisoner Alex Polari de Alverga, who was with him at the Air Force unit, at Galeão Air Base.
Stuart died on the night of May 14, 1971, and his body was never returned to his family. He was married to Sonia Maria Lopes de Moraes, who was also tortured to death in 1973 by agents of the DOI-CODI in São Paulo.
Zuzu Angel, his mother, a haute couture designer, undertook a tireless search for her son's body, which gave the case national and international attention. Zuzu died in March 1976 in a car accident caused by state forces, as determined in 1988 by the Ministry of Justice, without ever discovering any clue as to her son's whereabouts. Thirty years later, in 2006, her story of struggle was portrayed in the film "Zuzu Angel."
