Fla x Flu hits theaters

Chosen by the public jury as the best documentary at the Rio Festival, the film premieres on the 25th

The acclaimed documentary "Fla x Flu" will hit Rio de Janeiro cinemas next Friday (25.10). Chosen by the public jury as the best of the Rio Festival, it will be shown in six theaters in the city during the first week of screenings.

"We've set aside the cold, analytical testimonies of the roundtables to give voice to the always biased testimonies of the fans. We've created a fun Fla vs. Flu match, full of provocations and jokes. The film is about the healthiest rivalry there is, one that's treated with friendship and humor," said director Renato Terra.

Below, see the full interview from Flamengo's official website with Renato Terra, director of the documentary "Fla x Flu." After the final interview, you'll find a list of theaters showing the film starting Friday.

What makes your documentary different from others about football?

Fla x Flu is a film about passion. It's not a didactic documentary that presents a catalog of goals surrounded by statistics. It's a moving and, above all, humorous film.

We set aside the cold, analytical testimonies of roundtable discussions to give voice to the always biased opinions of fans. We promote a fun Fla vs. Flu match, full of provocations and jokes. The film addresses the healthiest rivalry possible, one that's treated with friendship and humor.

We selected 11 historic Fla x Flus matches, which form the film's chronological timeline: the first game, in 1912, and the classic's centenary, in 2012. We went through the Carioca finals played in 1963, 69, 83, 84, 85, 91, and 95. And also memorable games, like Zico's return, in 1986, and Galinho's farewell, in 1989. Between one game and the next, the film is filled with testimonials from fans in the playful spirit I introduced, and from players who have the authority to speak as fans, as is the case with Zico, Junior, Leandro, and Assis.

It's a film that has pleased Flamengo and Fluminense fans, but also fans of other teams and even people who aren't very into football.

What was the public's reaction to the Fla x Flu match at the Festival and what feedback do you expect from people in the cinema?

Many people went to see the film wearing Flamengo and Fluminense jerseys. The theaters were transformed into grandstands. It was a memorable experience, one I hope will be repeated when the film opens on Friday. People laughed, celebrated goals, and, above all, hoped that the testimonies of their teams' fans would outweigh the opposition's provocations. With each good response, people applauded. And the other side waited to respond.

There are sections in the film with cheering. At some screenings, people sang along. It was awesome! There were also instances of people interacting with the film, shouting provocations back at the screen.

What does it mean to win the award for best documentary from the popular jury?

It was the best award we could have won. It's a sign that people understood the film's purpose of portraying a healthy and humorous rivalry.

It also shows that we were able to please those who accompanied us to the screenings. There are many women today who love and understand soccer, but we received comments and read articles that gave examples of women who don't care about soccer and yet loved the film.
