Flamengo adopts selective waste collection in Gávea
The club's headquarters' trash cans were replaced last week

Flamengo is once again leading the way. This time, focusing on environmental awareness among all members and employees at its Gávea headquarters. Approximately five groups of recyclable waste containers have already been installed throughout the club, separating waste into paper, glass, plastic, and metal. Ten more are planned to be installed, all to facilitate recycling and leave the clubhouse cleaner for members.
Waste recycling in Rio de Janeiro is still very rare, but in most European countries and the United States, this system has been operating efficiently for over 20 years. Around 79% of packaging is reused abroad, and Rio de Janeiro didn't want to be left behind.
"Environmental awareness is already a part of the world, and Flamengo wanted to incorporate this into Gávea. The trash cans will make the work of those responsible for collecting trash easier, and consequently, members will be able to enjoy a more organized and clean club," said Cacau Cotta, vice president of administration and Fla-Gávea.
The initiative also pleased members. Luiz Claudio, father of a student at the swimming school, says that recycling is very important for children who are still developing an awareness of the issue.
"My son already does recycling at school and being able to have this practice within the club is a great incentive not only for him, but for all the other children who play sports here," said Luiz.
For partner Luciana Gomes, the method will also encourage parents.
“I thought the club’s proposal was really cool and I will definitely follow it and encourage my children and other members to follow it,” she told the member.
In addition to the recycling bins, approximately 20 individual trash cans were also placed throughout the club. The initiative was conceived by President Patricia Amorim and Vice President of Administration and Fla-Gávea Cacau Cotta.
