Flamengo and CFZ officially announced their partnership this Monday morning in Gávea. With president Patricia Amorim and Zico in attendance, the ceremony in the Rogério Steinberg auditorium also featured Marcos Braz, vice president of football, Rafael De Piro, vice president of legal affairs, and Bruno Coimbra, president of CFZ, Zico's son.
The merger between the two clubs essentially consists of the creation of "Flamengo B," where under-performing junior and professional players from Gávea would be loaned out to play in the second division for the CFZ team. Flamengo will be able to use the facilities of the Galinho team, which will also loan players who may be of interest to Flamengo. The agreement will last until the end of the president's term and may be extended.
Patricia Amorim, quite emotional, said she was especially happy to bring back the greatest idol of all time to the club.
"It is with great satisfaction that I come here today to announce this partnership. It is a great honor for me to bring Zico back to his home. This return demonstrates that we are on the right path, we are reclaiming our roots. Good training, long forgotten, is a priority for the current administration. We are committed to developing great players, great managers, and better people. And Zico represents all of this, as he led a successful generation," said the president, admitting to having been nervous in front of the star.
"I'm not nervous, I'm used to being around big names, politicians, but he leaves me breathless. I'm even having trouble conjugating verbs and using words," said Patricia, evaluating the new partnership as an investment.
"We consider this partnership a great investment. If we reveal two, three, four stars, it will have been worth it," he added.
Zico shares the same opinion as the manager and believes that Flamengo will reveal more talent.
"CFZ will be the bridge that can help develop players. With the structure we have, the possibilities will only increase. This partnership will include my active participation in observing the games, and Flamengo will have the security of knowing that it will not only be partnering with CFZ, but also with someone who will always be watching over the club."
Vice President of Football Marcos Braz highlighted the fact that the partnership allows players to continue playing, even without a place at the club.
"The partnership expands our athlete recruitment network, in addition to offering a B team of professionals, allowing newly graduated players without a place to continue playing, without losing their connection to Flamengo. We already have athletes playing for CFZ. Zico's presence will give us support and it is very important to have someone we completely trust by our side. It was a dream to have Zico back and little by little he is returning," said Braz.
Although the partnership was only officialized this Monday, four players in their final year of youth football were already loaned to Zico's club at the end of February: goalkeeper Marcelo Valverde, defensive midfielder Tales, and midfielders Welinton Peca and Jomar. CFZ, in turn, loaned left-winger Carlyle to Flamengo earlier this month for a four-year deal. Carlyle, the CFZ player from Brasília, scored two goals and helped eliminate the red-and-black team from the São Paulo Junior Football Cup this year.
