A document covering Flamengo's 51 most important matches, from its debut in football (1912) to its sixth Brazilian championship title (2009). This is the proposal of journalists Roberto Assaf and Roger Garcia, authors of the book "Grandes Jogos do Flamengo" (Great Games of Flamengo), published by Panini Books. The publication is an official product, licensed by the club through its Marketing Department. The launch will be this Thursday (January 28th), at 1 pm, at Livraria Travessa in Leblon shopping mall, Rio de Janeiro.
"Great Flamengo Games" brings together chronicles of 51 matches selected by the authors and features photos and testimonials from key figures. Assaf and Garcia, who previously co-authored "Zico - 50 Years of Football" in partnership with Galinho de Quintino, seek to contextualize each match, drawing on extensive research into the events that were significant—directly or indirectly—before, during, and after each match.
One of the biggest challenges in the production, according to the authors, was selecting the 50 most important, memorable, and intriguing matches of the red-and-black club. The number, in fact, had to be increased to 51 matches after winning the sixth Brazilian championship, when the project was already in an advanced stage of development.
The publication also recalls the teams that contributed to transforming - and maintaining - the club as a reference for the masses, with its extraordinary stars - such as Leônidas, Domingos da Guia, Zizinho, Zagallo, Dida, Evaristo, Dequinha, Rubens, Gérson, Geraldo, Doval, Zico, Júnior, Petkovic, among many other idols who passed through Gávea.
The deluxe edition (265 x 230 mm) is based on the book "Grandes Jogos do Maracanã" (Great Games of Maracanã), released by the same authors in September 2008, with photos from every game, as well as words from former president Márcio Braga and a summary of the club's founding. The suggested retail price is R$39,90.
Roberto Assaf, 54, has 30 years of experience and 11 books published. He has worked for Jornal dos Sports, Última Hora, Jornal do Brasil, Tribuna da Imprensa, TVE, and ESPN Brasil, among others. He was a commentator for Sportv and is currently a columnist for Diário Lance!, where he hosts a TV show and teaches journalism at the Hélio Alonso-FACHA College. Roger Garcia, 42, is a news producer for Sportv. He has worked as a reporter for Agência Noticiosa Sport Press, Jornal do Brasil, and O Dia (as a special reporter), among others, as deputy editor of Lance!, editor of Galvão Bueno's official website, and press officer for racing driver Cacá Bueno.
Livraria da Travessa is located in Shopping Leblon (Av. Afrânio de Mello Franco, 290 – store 205A – 2nd floor). The event starts at 19 pm.
