Flamengo pays tribute to Evaristo de Macedo
Former player was the main star of the red-black team in the 1950s and turned 80 this week

Flamengo's Historical Heritage department prepared a surprise for one of the club's greatest heroes. On Thursday afternoon (June 27.06), Evaristo de Macedo, who turned 80 last Saturday (June 22.06), was summoned to Gávea thinking he would be giving an interview. Upon arriving at the club, he was surprised by the presence of family members and two gifts: an official jersey of the club with the number 80 and his name on the back and a frame of his historic photos. Both were presented to him by Eduardo Bandeira de Mello, president of the club.
"I'm grateful for the memory and for everything I received today. I've already worked hard here at Flamengo. Now, I'm cheering from the outside to help the club win," said Evaristo de Macedo. The former player won three Rio de Janeiro championships with the "Mais Querido" in the 1950s and is considered one of the greatest players in the club's history. Upon stepping foot in Gávea again, Evaristo couldn't hide his emotion.
"There's no doubt (that my heart is beating faster). My best moments as a player were here at Flamengo. Although I went to other great teams (Barcelona and Real Madrid), what marked me the most was playing for Flamengo. It's a very pleasant memory. Nothing erases the best moments I had here," said Evaristo.
The tribute was justified by Bruno Lucena, a historian who is part of the club's Historical Heritage department: "Evaristo is a human being much loved by all who love football. He is also important in the history of Flamengo. In the 50s, Flamengo could field two teams with the same level as the Brazilian National Team, and Evaristo was the greatest star of this team of stars. We can only thank him and congratulate him on his 80th birthday."
