Flamengo mourns the death of José Alencar
The club will be in official mourning for three days in honor of the former vice-president.

It is with great sadness that Clube de Regatas do Flamengo mourns the death of one of its most illustrious fans, José Alencar. The former vice-president of the Republic passed away this Tuesday (29), at 14:41 pm, due to multiple organ failure, at the age of 79, at the Sírio-Libanês hospital, in São Paulo. The politician from Minas Gerais had been battling abdominal cancer for 13 years.
Alencar never hid his passion for the red-black team, so much so that on the bench in his office in Brasília he kept the banner of the sixth championship won in 2009.
In an interview with Isto É magazine in December 2009, he made a point of explaining that this love came from afar. And he named one by one the players responsible for Flamengo's three-time state championship in 1942, 1943, and 1444, with special emphasis on Domingos da Guia, Perácio, and Zizinho.
Originally from Muriaé, in the Zona da Mata region of Minas Gerais, the vice president was strongly influenced by Rio de Janeiro as a child. "We subscribed to Rio newspapers and didn't have anything that wasn't from Rio. We'd earn a few bucks in Minas Gerais and spend them in Rio," he recalled.
President Patricia Amorim ordered three days of official mourning and requested that a minute of silence be observed before the match between Flamengo and Duque de Caxias, at the Engenhão.
Alencar's body will be laid out at the Planalto Palace, with honors befitting a Head of State.
