The fire that destroyed part of the Claudio Coutinho Gymnasium, in Gávea, left all Flamengo fans very sad this Thursday morning (November 29.11th). The Flamengo president spoke with the firefighters who extinguished the fire, shortly after it was brought under control, and made a point of refuting any possibility of an electrical malfunction in the space used by Flamengo's gymnastics team.

Patricia Amorim further explained when the fire started and that only an on-site investigation will be able to determine its cause.

"The fire started around 8:30 am, initially on the right side of the gymnasium, but the main focus ended up being on the left side, where the pit is located, which is a foam pit where athletes perform acrobatics. So there is a large concentration of flammable material and the fire spread rapidly. Our electrical panel is intact. It wasn't an electrical malfunction. And there's no indication that we can say anything at this point. Only after the conclusion of the investigation, which has already arrived at the club. Two investigations will be carried out, by the fire department and the civil defense, which has already arrived at the club. From there, we can clarify everything. The important thing is that as soon as the fire started, the club was isolated. Security did an exemplary job, isolating the area. We had no injuries. Our equipment all worked quickly. This was attested by the Fire Department. As soon as they arrived, the fire was quickly controlled, fortunately," stated the president, revealing that the club had recently made investments in the facility and had also received equipment from the Brazilian Olympic Committee.

"Flamengo invested R$ 400 in the renovation of this gymnasium and received R$ 300 in equipment, with support from the Brazilian Olympic Committee. But we are going to rebuild this gymnasium. As soon as the expert assessment is finished, the reconstruction and recovery work will begin."

Regarding the reopening of the space for the activities that took place there, Patricia Amorim assured that a great effort will be made to have the gym reopened as quickly as possible.

"One third of the gymnasium was destroyed. Without the pit, the athletes' acrobatics are compromised. The platform is also partially destroyed and can only be used in its entirety. The gymnasium is not in usable condition due to the damage to the site. We will await the expert assessment to try to understand how much of the space will be affected," he concluded.

Clube de Regatas do Flamengo also informs that it has current property insurance and that it will be activated.
