Flamengo defeated Guanabara 6-1 in a quarterfinal match of the Brazilian Beach Soccer Cup this Friday (February 17.02) at Arena da Gávea. With the result, the red-and-black team secured a spot in the championship semifinals. The match marked the first meeting between father and son in a professional beach soccer match. Experience spoke volumes, and Benjamin Sr. scored two goals in Flamengo's rout of his namesake son's team.
In addition to Benjamin, Daniel (2), Juninho and Diego scored for the Most Beloved. Guanabara's consolation goal was scored by Pedrinho.
At the end of the match, the veteran spoke about the advantages and disadvantages of playing against his own son.
"It's part of it, right? But I'm happy to see him here playing professionally for the first time at just 17 years old. I thank God for this opportunity, for wearing this jersey," he said.
The boy, despite being upset after the defeat and elimination, also spoke fondly of his father.
"I've always watched him play and admire him greatly. I try to follow him, imitate him, but it's very difficult. He's my biggest idol in the sport," he said proudly of his father.
Flamengo returns to action tomorrow (February 18.02th) at 12:45 pm against Madureira (RJ) in the semifinals. If they win, they will play in the final on Sunday at 12:45 pm. Flamengo coach Rogério Vilela is confident of victory.
"There's no such thing as an easy game. We're going into this game always respecting our opponent. Tomorrow, I'll try to maintain the standard and consistency that have led us to a 100% record so far. Reaching the final will be very important for Flamengo, as it hasn't happened since 2003. I believe in this team's potential," he stated.
