Flapedia turns two years old
Flamengo's online encyclopedia has over 5 articles

On the same day that fans commemorate another year since Flamengo won the World Championship on December 13, 1981, an initiative of Clube de Regatas do Flamengo celebrates another year. It's Flapédia, hosted on Flamengo's official website (http://www.flamengo.com.br/flapedia/Flap%C3%A9dia).
Launched in 2007, the Club's Collaborative Encyclopedia has since become a reference for fans seeking biographies, historical data, statistics, and lists of titles, among other information. It contains over 5.600 entries. "We created Flapédia to be a source of reference for fans, a living encyclopedia, constantly updated by contributors interested in researching and preserving Flamengo's history," explains Ricardo Hinrichsen, the club's executive marketing director.
To prevent the site from being vandalized by fans of other clubs, unlike Wikipedia, collaborations must be approved in advance by volunteer administrators. Over the course of two years, Flapédia has already received support from dozens of Flamengo fans. But the team most dedicated to the initiative is relatively small.
Danyel Braga, one of Flapédia's administrators, says he liked the project from the beginning. "It's a good idea to try to bring together everything about Flamengo, the club's entire history, in one place, made by fans for other fans. At the same time as you collaborate and add new content, you end up learning more about the club's history," explains the international relations student, who lives in Rio.
According to him, his favorite job is managing previously unpublished statistics. "For example, finding out who the foreigners who have played the most for Flamengo are, or which goalkeepers have worn the most caps, and much of Flapédia's content is previously unpublished and can only be found there. But of course, that's the easy work. At the beginning of the project, until we had the most basic content available, we had to do a lot of laborious work, like adding every match in the club's history."
Another contributor, Marcelo Borges de Gouvêa, from Brasília, says he became interested in participating as soon as he discovered Flapédia. "I really enjoy football history, especially Flamengo, and statistics. It's a job that requires research, a lot of organization, and good collaboration with the other contributors. The main challenge is to continue expanding the site so that it can become an even better reference for research on Flamengo," he says.
Carlos Henrique Guarita Doua, another frequent contributor, sees impartiality as a challenge. "You have to avoid bias when writing, update all data promptly, find rare but essential information, and establish priorities."
Team needs to grow - With an ever-increasing number of articles, the challenge becomes attracting more contributors and diversifying research sources. "I see three challenges: improving the quality of the content, presenting new, unpublished articles that are only available on Flapédia, and further democratizing Flapédia by increasing its number of contributors, which is still low today. We need to at least triple the number of full-time contributors. And I think Flapédia has reached a point where we need to deepen our research for written material about Flamengo; online searches are practically exhausted," says Danyel Braga.
Bahian Alex Daniel Barreto Ferreira believes that, as a volunteer, one of the challenges is balancing his activities (study, work) with the time and dedication Flapédia requires to ensure the encyclopedia has the necessary credibility. Dedicated to updating player profiles and various biographies, Alex Ferreira sees his hobby as a mission.
"I often say that a true Flamengo fan is like a soldier, always at the service of the nation, and as a good son of the nation, he serves it with the pride of someone who defends his own existence. I feel very proud to contribute to Flapédia articles and suddenly see that these articles are disseminated on pages across the internet. Furthermore, the collaboration itself is very cool, because it ends up making me an expert on a subject I'm passionate about: Flamengo," he highlights.
