Following a request from Flamengo, a minute of silence will be observed in honor of Father José Benedito Reis during Sunday's derby against Fluminense at the Engenhão stadium. The priest died Monday afternoon of cancer and was buried on Tuesday. Benedito offered numerous prayers and blessings to the red-and-black team during difficult times.

The request was made by Flamengo at a meeting on Tuesday afternoon at the Rio Football Federation, which informed the club that it had accepted the request.

Known for celebrating Mass wearing a red-and-black shirt under his cassock, Benedito was buried in Caju Cemetery wearing a red-and-black uniform. At the wake, held at Santo Cristo Church, Flamengo was represented by vice-president of football Paulo Cesar Coutinho, who emphasized the priest's dedication to the Sacred Mantle.

"Our anthem says, 'Once a Flamengo, Flamengo until death.' But I'm sure that Father Benedito will continue to be a Flamengo wherever he is. He was a sports enthusiast. He believed that sports were the best tool for inclusion," said the Flamengo leader at the time.

Bené, as he was affectionately known by those closest to him, was the parish priest for many years at the Church of Saint Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of Flamengo and the saint of impossible causes. Benedito, however, was transferred to the Church of Santo Cristo, but was always called upon to bless Gávea.
