Gilmar: "The fans put me on the Brazilian team"
Goalkeeper recalls the 1994 World Cup when he defended Rubro-Negro and won the world title for Brazil

Gilmar joined Flamengo at age 32, before being called up to the national team that won the fourth title in 1994. He returned to his best form with Flamengo and, in excellent form, was one of the standout players on the Flamengo team that won the 1991 Carioca Championship and the 1992 Brazilian Championship. During Flamengo's fifth title campaign, he was the only Flamengo player to play every game. Once again in the spotlight, he was called up by Carlos Alberto Parreira for the 1994 World Cup in the USA. He believes the Flamengo fans played a key role in his selection.
"It was the Flamengo fans who put me back on the national team, singing and chanting my name. We were in a very good phase, and that gave me a lot of confidence to return and be in that '94 squad." Furthermore, the former Flamengo goalkeeper commented on the World Cup-winning squad in the USA and the current team. "One similarity between that team I was part of and the current one is that we both went through difficult times and doubts. Back then, we chose to take it one game at a time, worrying only about the next match. Furthermore, in moments like these, everyone needs to support each other and instill confidence, as it's a time of great pressure," he said.
After winning his fourth World Cup title with the Brazilian national team, Gilmar left Flamengo and ended his career with Cerezo Osaka in Japan. In addition to his fourth title, Gilmar won a silver medal for Brazil at the 1984 Olympics, this time as a starter. Among his individual awards, he received the Silver Ball from Placar magazine in 1986 and 1989.
