Ibope reaffirms: Fla has the largest fan base in Brazil
Research institute clarifies that study released last week was distorted

Some Brazilian sports media incorrectly reported that Flamengo and Corinthians, according to a survey released by the Brazilian Institute of Public Opinion and Statistics (Ibope) last week, had fan bases of equal size. However, the agency that conducted the study itself expressed surprise at the repercussions of the fact and insisted that "the survey was misinterpreted."
When contacted by Flamengo's Official Website, Ibope emphasized that the survey, which examines the consumption habits of those who watch sports content on TV and online, has nothing to do with the size of Brazilian clubs' fan bases. This is particularly true because it was conducted in only 12 cities, two of which were in São Paulo (São Paulo, the capital, and Campinas).
"The survey is representative only of the Brazilian regions in which it was conducted, not of the entire population. It's quite common to see hasty interpretations of survey results, and we understand that this is due to the lack of familiarity of the press or even the public in correctly reading survey data. In this specific case, it's important to emphasize that the survey was conducted in 12 metropolitan regions of the country and, therefore, represents the opinion of the population of these regions, not of the entire country," said Dora Câmara, commercial director of Ibope Media.
In the latest survey focusing on the fan base size of Brazilian soccer clubs, Ibope ranked Flamengo in first place, hands down. Released in June 2010, the study indicated that Flamengo had 33,2 million fans (17,2%) in Brazil. Corinthians came in second, far behind, with 25,8 million (13,4%), followed by São Paulo (8,7%), Palmeiras (6%), and Vasco (4,1%).
In this case, Ibope interviewed 7.109 people, aged 10 and over, in 141 cities of all types and sizes.

The survey released by Ibope last week was carried out in 12 cities Brazilian: Sao Paulo, Campinas, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Recife, Fortaleza, Curitiba, Florianópolis, Porto Alegre, Goiânia and the Federal District.
However, each city had a different number of respondents, and São Paulo ended up having a much larger sample than Rio de Janeiro, partly because it involved two cities. Here are the numbers of respondents in each city: São Paulo – 1680; Campinas – 420; Rio de Janeiro – 1400; Belo Horizonte – 700; Recife – 700; Porto Alegre – 700; Curitiba – 700; Distrito Federal – 700; Salvador – 700; Fortaleza – 700; Florianópolis – 300; and Goiânia – 300.
With these numbers, we can draw the following conclusion. Campinas and São Paulo had a total of 23,4% of respondents, compared to 15,5% in Rio de Janeiro. Therefore, the likelihood of Corinthians having a high percentage is clear, given that it is the most popular club in São Paulo. However, even in a less favorable scenario, Flamengo remained at the top, proving that it has the largest fan base in Brazil.
