José Carlos de Costa Araújo, known as Zé Carlos, passed away on Friday night, July 24, in Rio de Janeiro, after contracting cancer. Flamengo's goalkeeper, once in the 80s and once in the 90s, played a decisive role in some of the club's historic achievements, notably the 1987 Brazilian championship, the 1990 Copa do Brasil, and the 1986 and 1996 state championships. Zé Carlos also served on the Brazilian national team, being part of the team that participated in the 1990 Italian Cup.
There is still no information about the athlete's burial, who after ending his professional career, began playing for Flamengo's masters team.
