The red-black nation lost an illustrious member this Saturday (04.12). Flamengo's doctor in the 70s and 80s, where the club conquered the world, Giuseppe Taranto passed away this morning in a hospital in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro.
Taranto was battling bowel cancer and preparing for another surgery when he developed heart complications. The body of the illustrious Flamengo fan will lie in state in Gávea, from 6 p.m. this Saturday until noon on Sunday (December 5). The body will then be taken to the Caju Cemetery, where it will be cremated.
And Taranto's importance to Flamengo is reflected in the words of those who knew him. Vanderlei Luxemburgo, the team's current coach, was one of those who had this golden opportunity and was deeply saddened by the news.
"Flamengo may feel orphaned today. I feel as if I've lost a father, which is what Giuseppe was for us, that generation," said Luxa.
The club's greatest idol, Zico, also expressed his condolences on his official website. And to prove that Taranto was truly a beloved figure, Galinho, like Luxa, considered him a second father.
"Dr. Taranto is one of the strongest friendships I made within Flamengo. A family friend, someone I spoke to constantly and who used to celebrate birthdays with me, as his birthday is March 4th. It's a great loss of a great friend, but also of an excellent doctor who dedicated much of his professional life to Flamengo," concluded Zico.
