On Wednesday afternoon (October 09.10), after the Chicago Bulls' training session, the Washington Wizards held a training session at the Hélio Maurício Gymnasium, at the Gávea clubhouse. The two teams held their first training session in Brazil, preparing for their match on Saturday (October 12.10) at the HSBC Arena. Of the entire Wizards squad, the most well-known player was Brazilian Nenê Hilário. He and some of his teammates received t-shirts from Nação Rubro-Negra, Flamengo's fan club program.
"I loved the gift. I'm happy, even though I used to play for Vasco. Actually, that has nothing to do with it. I like all the clubs in Rio de Janeiro and I'm grateful for the shirt I received," said Nenê.
The Wizards' biggest star in attendance at Gávea was point guard John Wall. He was one of the recipients of the Nação jersey and made a point of highlighting the positive reception the team received in Gávea and across Brazil.
"This is my first time in Brazil and I can say I'm impressed with the organization. We arrived here at the club (Flamengo) and everything was already ready and organized for us. I also see that there's a lot of excitement for Saturday's match. The truth is I'm really enjoying this opportunity to play here in Rio," said the athlete, holding his Nação jersey in his hands.
The Wizards' practice was open to the press, but it wasn't possible to see much of the team's strategy. The players stretched, warmed up, repeated several individual plays, and practiced shooting from the paint. The team will return to training at Gávea next Friday (October 11.10) at 10 a.m.
