On a beautiful sunny Sunday in Rio de Janeiro, the only thing missing from the celebrations at Arena da Gávea, where the final of the first edition of the Brazilian Beach Soccer Cup was played, was the fact that Flamengo lost on penalties to Corinthians de Santo André (SP). After a 2-2 draw in regulation time, the São Paulo team's goalkeeper, Carlos, shone and secured the title.
Flamengo captain Benjamin, a sports star, praised the opposing team and recalled that even without the title, the red-black initiative was pioneering and extremely important for promoting the sport.
"The Flamengo team deserves congratulations. From the beginning, we showed great dedication. Unfortunately, we didn't win the championship, but this is just the beginning of a project, and I'm sure many more titles will come to Flamengo," said Benjamin.
With a 100% record in the competition, the two teams promised a great match at Arena da Gávea. With the support of their fans, the Red-Blacks started the match pressing their opponents and soon managed to open the scoring with Daniel, who crossed the ball after a pass from Moska. The home team dominated the match and almost extended their lead with Benjamin's free kick, had it not been for a fine save from goalkeeper Carlos.
But Corinthians changed their stance and, early in the second half, equalized. After a scramble in the box, Anderson simply had to tap the ball into the back of the net. Flamengo narrowly missed finishing the half with a lead thanks to shots from Daniel and Casé, but Carlos once again saved the São Paulo team.
The final 12 minutes of regulation time were the most exciting. After being fouled on the wing, Moska took a low shot, the ball bounced off the goalkeeper's mound and flew over Marcos: 2-1 Flamengo. Corinthians equalized shortly afterward, with Anderson's well-placed shot.
Both teams still had a chance to finish the match, but both goalkeepers managed to take the game to extra time. As they were unable to score in the following three minutes, the decision went to alternating penalty kicks.
Benjamin took the first for Flamengo, and Carlos saved it. Robertinho then flew to palm away Anderson's shot. Gabriel took the second for Flamengo, and Carlos saved it again. It was then that Dunga fired a low shot into the corner to secure the title for Corinthians de Santo André.
