Rio de Janeiro's State Secretary of Sports, Tourism, and Recreation, Márcia Lins, announced a series of measures aimed at adapting the Maracanã stadium for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. These measures will be implemented in the first round of the Campeonato Carioca.

The most controversial is the ban on the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages on the streets surrounding stadiums. Alcohol sales cannot be made within a 500-meter perimeter between two hours before and two hours after matches. City Hall promises enforcement.

Initially, the measures will only be applied to Maracanã. But the city government plans to extend them to other stadiums, such as Engenhão and São Januário.

"Obviously, this will affect some establishments around Maracanã. But the ban is being implemented for a greater good. These measures are already effective in several countries around the world, and we are simply copying them. Furthermore, the law enforcement measures being implemented in some areas of the city will also affect the stadium's surroundings," stated Rodrigo Bethlem, Municipal Secretary of Public Order.

Furthermore, Rodrigo Bethlem announced that ticket scalpers and illegal parking will be cracked down on. City Hall advises drivers to park in the Cidade Nova parking lot and take the metro at Estácio or UERJ stations. Alternatively, take public transportation, which would be ideal.

A bike rack with capacity for 450 spaces will also be created inside the stadium, at gates 13, 15, and 17, and an additional 50 spaces outside. The idea is to encourage fans living near Maracanã to cycle.
