Paulinho's farewell
At 80 years of age, one of the greatest strikers in Flamengo's history passes away

Last Friday (08.11), former player Paulo de Almeida, better known as Paulinho, passed away at the age of 80. The former striker played for Flamengo from 1951 to 1958 and scored 58 goals in 142 matches. His two main titles at Gávea were the State Championships of 1954 and 55.
His biggest competition was the 1955 State Championship. Besides being the top scorer with 23 goals, Paulinho was voted the championship's best player by the press at the time. Two games during that campaign were unforgettable for the former striker: the Fla-Fluminense win 6-1, with three goals from him, and the match against Botafogo, in which Paulinho scored both goals in a 2-1 victory.
A year earlier, in the 1954 State Championship, Flamengo won its second championship after a 2-1 victory over Vasco, with Paulinho scoring the winning goal. In 1956, he was called up to the Brazilian National Team, and, for the Mais Querido, he left his mark on the biggest rout in the history of Maracanã (12-2 over São Cristóvão).
On August 16, 2013, Flamengo paid tribute to Paulinho and four of his teammates (Zagallo, Evaristo, Índio and Esquerdinha), promoting a meeting between the stars, who had not seen each other for many years, at the Gávea social headquarters.
