Papada, Paulo Henrique Ganso, Magro de Aço, hero of the sixth title, or simply Ronaldo Angelim. This is the man who wears Flamengo's number 4 jersey. Humble, talented, and effective, the experienced Flamengo defender knows his importance to the Flamengo squad and hopes to continue being a key player, as he has been since arriving at Gávea.
Since joining Flamengo in 2006, Angelim has played 228 matches, only failing to start eight of them. He has scored 15 goals, provided three assists, and has never been sent off. In addition to winning the 2006 Copa do Brasil, the 2007-2009 Carioca championship, and last year's Brazilian championship, the defender continues to prove his worth day after day.
At 34, after renewing his contract until the end of next year, Angelim is thinking about ending his career at Flamengo with even more glory. In an interview with the club's official website, the defender spoke about fulfilling his dream of working with Zico, his role as leader of this group, and his often-praised physical fitness.
Flamengo's official website team: For you, who have always declared yourself a Flamengo fan, what is it like now to be working alongside Zico, the greatest idol in the club's history?
Ronaldo Angelim: It's more than a dream come true. I even think that if I've been a Flamengo fan since I was a kid, it's precisely because of Zico. He was a great player, the greatest in the club's history, and I believe nothing could be better than working with him.
Team: You're one of the most experienced players in this group. How can you help the young players who make up the majority of the squad?
Angelim: Besides myself, there are also Pet, Leo, and Juan, who are players with a lot of experience and can help in this role. It's important to have some more experienced players to help the kids. We have a group with a lot of potential here, and we need to do everything we can to showcase that on the field.
Team: Talking to the fitness coaches, we learned that you're one of the players in the best shape, despite your age. Is that the old "Skinny Steel" story?
Angelim: I take good care of myself. I watch my diet, sleep well, rest to recover and be at 100%, and I'm happy to be in such good physical condition, despite my age, because it helps me a lot during games.
Team: We noticed your cleats. They have your children's names on them, right? What's your relationship with family and soccer like?
Angelim: The reality is, first and foremost, if I haven't retired yet, I owe it largely to my children. I haven't yet achieved significant financial independence, and I do so with their future in mind.
Team: You are one of the players most popular with the red-black fans, what do you have to say about them?
Angelim: The Flamengo fans are fantastic. They've always had a great affection for me, and I believe that even grew after that goal against Grêmio. Their support is another motivation for me and is essential for all the players. I've always been a Flamengo fan, I know what it's like to be on the other side, and I'm very happy to be able to bring joy to the fans.
Team: What can we expect from Flamengo in the second half of the year?
Angelim: I believe the team is working hard, the board has been strengthening the squad, and we can indeed have a good campaign. We still have many games left in the Brasileirão, and we're going to fight for it. Last year, no one believed in us, and we won the title. Who knows, maybe we can do it again?
