Exactly 32 years ago, the world bowed before one of the greatest teams in football history. On December 13, 1981, in Tokyo, Japan, Flamengo defeated Liverpool 3-0 to win the most coveted trophy among clubs on the planet. With goals from Nunes (2) and Adílio, under the masterful leadership of Zico, Flamengo gave the English team no chance and became world champions.
For Adílio, talking about this game is a source of great joy. "I still remember that day with great fondness. I remember all the accomplishments we and our club achieved. It was a wonderful thing to be part of that group, a magical thing for all of us. It was fate; we were there on the right day and at the right club. If it had been for another team, we wouldn't have won the trophy, because Flamengo has that positive energy in the finals. We always celebrate this day deeply," he said.
Liverpool had a great team and was greatly feared in Europe in 1981. However, the quality of the red-and-black squad was so great that the English side had no chance of reacting when they began to be attacked by Flamengo. So, we decided to do what we knew best: pass the ball forward. We went all the way to their goal and back. We had complete control of the game. Raul (the goalkeeper) didn't touch the ball. Later, we learned from the English players themselves that they had never faced such a wonderful team," he said.
With the final whistle, a historic squad was immortalized. Fantastic players who reached their rightful place: the top of the world.
