I am one of the greatest advocates of professionalism in Brazilian sports management. I may have displeased some leaders who, out of passion, have dedicated precious time to the sport, and because of a communication problem on my part, they may misinterpret my words. Due to the complexity that sports have become in recent times, with the professionalization in of the fields, of the courts (athletes, coaches, referees) and the economic character that this generated, I have preached the need for professionalization, too, out of the fields and courts (managers).\ Thanks to volunteer managers, major brands in Brazilian sports have been built over time. From the 80s onward, the economic dimension of the sport, achieved with the entry of new players, such as television and advertisers, required a change in its management model, with the presence of professionals qualified to discuss with these new players. In the 90s, two new players emerged: licensed football agents, representing the athletes, and investment groups, making the market even more complex.\ With the invitation extended by president Márcio Braga, to take over Flamengo's Olympic sports and transform it into a business unit modern and in line with market reality, I came across several offers of voluntary work, whose importance in modern society, in its various sectors, we cannot question. \ The new role of the volunteer in sport\ We have two types of volunteers: the leader and the one who wants to help by dedicating part of his time to a cause (non-leader).\ The volunteer leader, in the model we are going to propose, leaves the operational level protocols for strategic level, through a Group or Management Council. This council will approve the Strategic plan (mission, priorities, short, medium and long-term objectives) and Efficiency (human, material and financial resources) of Business Unit. It will also be responsible for recruiting, selecting, and hiring the professional team that will implement this plan. The board meets periodically with the professional team to evaluate the results. Non-management volunteers can be recruited and selected within a Volunteer Program to assist with various projects, duly coordinated and supervised by the professional team. Joao Henrique Areias
