The press conference this Monday (June 17.06) in Gávea was intended to introduce Mano Menezes, Flamengo's new coach. About three months ago, Eduardo Paes, the mayor of Rio, promised to give the club R$5 million to complete the construction of modules 16 and 17, which will be used by the professionals, at the training center. The funds have not yet been released, but Bandeira de Mello, the club's president, is confident that good news regarding this matter will come soon.
"We are waiting. There is great anxiety because the training center is essential for us. Mayor Eduardo Paes, at the event honoring Zico's birthday (in March), announced that he would help us complete the first phase of the training center. No one imagines the mayor going back on his word. We have a meeting scheduled with him for next week, and I imagine everything will be resolved because Rio's City Hall has already signaled its intention to strengthen the city's major clubs. I'm sure we'll have good news in the short term," explained the Flamengo president.
Another topic Bandeira de Mello addressed during the press conference introducing Mano Menezes was the status of negotiations with the Maracanã Consortium. The trio of companies Odebrecht, AEG, and IMX won the bidding process and will manage Brazil's premier stadium for the next 35 years. The president of the Red-Black team was very clear in stating that he will only sign a contract for the Mais Querido to host matches at Maracanã again if the conditions offered are excellent.
"Negotiations with the Maracanã Consortium continue. We intend to reach a happy ending for all parties involved, but this requires great care on our part. We can only sign a contract if it's excellent for Flamengo. And something excellent for Flamengo can also be excellent for the other partners. I believe we will reach a good agreement, but we cannot rush into things. The matter is being raised within the club with great care, and we respect all proposals that arise within the club. Negotiations continue, but we will only close the deal when we reach a conclusion that meets Flamengo's long-term interests," said the club's president.
