São Paulo president ratified Flamengo's fifth title

Handing over the five-time Brazilian champion trophy to Flamengo, which was supposed to be an act of chivalry, became an obligation for São Paulo president Juvenal Juvêncio.

At least, according to a statement from the Club of 13, dated June 24, 1988, which has among its signatories the director of Tricolor.

LANCE! had access to the statement that will be released this Monday by Clube dos 13. The document has seven clauses and was written after a meeting at Palmeiras' headquarters.

In it, the 13 clubs that participated in the meeting, in addition to Vasco (which was not present but was among those who ratified the note) reserved two clauses to talk about Flamengo's title in the 1987 Copa União.

On Thursday, Clube dos 13 emphasized that the CBF was wrong to not accept the decision of the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) that annulled the act of proclaiming Sport and Guarani as the 1987 Brazilian champions.

Clause seven expresses the opinion of the Club of 13 members regarding the competition's winners. For the members, there's no doubt about the Red-Blacks' fourth Brazilian championship title.

“In view of all the above, I confirm, in capital letters, that Flamengo and Internacional are indeed the legitimate Brazilian champions and runners-up of 1987, whatever the final decision may be in the near or distant future...” – wrote the members of the Club of 13 in the note.

At this meeting, Juvenal Juvêncio was serving his first term as president of São Paulo, for the 1988/1989 biennium. And the director's desire to see Flamengo become champion was so great that there are minutes of other meetings that record his disagreement with the title given to Sport.

Carlos Miguel Aidar, who signed the 1988 statement as president of the Club of 13, had already left the presidency of São Paulo, but was head of the club's Deliberative Council.

This Monday, Flamengo will notify São Paulo about its right to the cup.
