Flamengo's fan base has almost doubled proportionally since 1954

The GPP Institute released this Thursday a survey conducted in Rio de Janeiro on the percentage of Rio fans. The survey was conducted between November 29th and 30th, in Rio de Janeiro alone, with 800 respondents over the age of 16.

The results confirm that the vast majority support Flamengo: 45,6% of respondents said they support Flamengo. Vasco came in second, with 16,3%, followed by Fluminense (11,8%) and Botafogo (9%). 1,9% of respondents support other clubs, and 15,4% said they don't support any. The survey's margin of error is 3,5 percentage points.

Flamengo nearly doubled its fan base in Rio de Janeiro over the course of five decades. In a 1954 poll by Ibope, the Gávea club had 28% of the support, Fluminense 18%, Vasco 17%, América 6%, Botafogo 5%, Bangu 2%, and São Cristóvão 1%. The percentage of those who didn't support any club was 23%.

According to a 2004 LANCE!/Ibope survey, Flamengo has a fan base of 33 million Brazilians, ranking first in the national rankings. Vasco has 10 million fans (in fifth place), Botafogo has 2,7 million (11th) and Fluminense has 2,2 million (12th).
