A small, daily transformation is underway in Gávea. Without much fanfare, the club's headquarters has been undergoing a series of renovations. The goal of the improvements, according to FlaGávea's general director, Cacau Cotta, is to increase comfort for members, athletes, and professionals who work at Flamengo.
One of the priorities, already in the first week of January, was the general cleaning of the club, especially the removal of debris scattered in various areas. "There was a lot of weeds to weed. In these areas, we poured cement around the garden to prevent the weeds from growing back. We also improved access to the futsal and basketball courts, installed lighting on the courts, and are now pruning the trees," he says.
In soccer, the storeroom and laundry room were repainted. Olympic sports are getting a storeroom. And FlaGávea is also investing in the water park area. "We're renovating the men's and women's bathrooms in the pool, which will be completely refurbished. They were uninhabitable and couldn't even be entered. We're building a new, fully modernized bathroom, with a locker room, shower, new tiles, plumbing, and electrical systems. For this, we're using part of the budget and funds from the club's Baile do Vermelho e Preto (Red and Black Ball) at Scala," explains the general director, who estimates the new facilities will be completed by mid-March.
Specific improvements and renovations, which don't attract much attention, are being made, such as replacing the pool ladder, which was previously made of iron and is now made of steel with carpet, tiling, painting the railings, and replacing the bathroom doors. Non-slip flooring is also being installed in the locker rooms to prevent accidents. The renovations are being carried out through a partnership with Locanti, which is providing employees and machinery.
Another concern is security. "Security guards were hired to fill vacant positions, and efforts are being made to make it difficult for non-members to enter," says Cacau Cotta.
The results are already being felt among members, he says. "People are congratulating us. We've noticed an increase in demand from members due to the quality of maintenance and cleaning."
