Many people want to donate blood, but due to lack of information, they end up not donating, or waiting until someone they know is in need. Below is a newsletter from the HemoRio website with key information about blood donation.

\

how to donate

\

There are 03 main types of donation: whole blood, apheresis and autologous donation.

\

Whole Blood Donation: This is the usual donation, where up to 450 ml of blood is collected in a bag made with materials and solutions that allow blood preservation. Men can donate every 2 months, up to 2 times a year, and women can donate every 4 months, up to 3 times a year.

\

How is whole blood donation done?

\

1. Registration: The donor, carrying an official photo ID, is registered and receives a questionnaire to complete. This questionnaire aims to assess whether there is any condition or illness that prevents blood donation. Therefore, answers must be honest, and any questions should be clarified in the next step – clinical screening.

\

2. Clinical screening: The donor is interviewed and examined by a healthcare professional in a location that guarantees privacy and confidentiality of information. This professional reviews the questionnaire responses and assesses individuals at high risk of transmitting blood-borne diseases. The donor must be aware that their responses are crucial to ensuring their physical safety, as well as that of the recipient. The safety of the transfusion patient begins with the donor.

\

3. Blood collection: The blood collection lasts a maximum of 10 minutes. All equipment used is sterile and disposable. There is no risk of contracting diseases by donating blood.

\

4. Snack – after donating, the donor receives a snack and information about the basic precautions that must be taken after blood collection.

\
