Dressed in his robe, José Aldo does his final training before UFC Rio

World champion, red-black fighter works at dawn to adapt to the fight schedule

UFC featherweight champion José Aldo, a Flamengo athlete, has been facing a routine that may seem unusual. He's been training in the wee hours of the morning to adapt to the schedule of his UFC Rio fight, which will take place this Saturday (January 14.01th). But this is common in the life of the Flamengo fan.

According to José Aldo's coach, André Pederneiras, the same training is done outside Brazil when they prepare for a fight. It just so happened that the fight in Rio de Janeiro was scheduled for the early hours of Saturday morning.

"The adaptation we're doing here is the same as when we travel, since there's a normal time difference. We need to train exactly at the time of the fight so the athlete's body can get used to the time. Here, it happened to be in the early hours of the morning," André Pederneiras told Sportv.com.

To explain a little more about the work that takes place in the days leading up to a fight, José Aldo's coach emphasized that the athlete's entire life changes depending on the fight schedule. He continues to adhere to the mandatory eight hours of sleep, thus adapting his diet and rest according to his training.

"In this final stretch, the efforts are more focused on weight loss. There aren't many demands on technical training, as the work has already been done. The focus now is really on getting the athlete to adapt and perform well," André told Sportv.com.

The Flamengo champion, who outside Brazil typically struggles a bit more in the final days before a fight, is much better at home. Which could be an advantage when it comes to stepping into the octagon.

"Weight loss, which is normally more difficult, has been very easy here. I'm already used to the climate and home-cooked food, and that has been a huge advantage," Aldo concluded.
