Flamengo Imperadores announces two major signings for the 2020 season
Rubro-Negro signs quarterback Ramon "Mamão" Martire and running back Rômulo "R40" Ramos
By Communication - Flamengo - inAmerican football is on hold in Brazil due to the coronavirus pandemic, but Flamengo Imperadores continues to move to strengthen the team. Last Wednesday (01), Rubro-Negro announced the signings of quarterback Ramon "Mamão" Martire and running back Rômulo "R40" Ramos, two stars of the oval ball in the country.
Both players have played for the team at different times. "R40" was part of the team's early days, when it was still called Rio de Janeiro Imperadores, and went on to win two Brazilian championships, in 2009 and 2011. "Mamão" led the attack until the Touchdown Tournament final in 2013, when Mais Querido finished second.
Both were members of the Brazilian national team at the 2015 American Football World Cup in Canton, USA. Besides the World Cup, Rômulo has spent over 10 years with Brasil Onças. "R40" was in the first match in 2007, and in the national team's last appearance in 2017, in a friendly match held at Mineirão Stadium. Ramon also has extensive experience wearing the yellow jersey, with numerous call-ups and training camps for the national team.
Ramon Martire spoke about his return to Flamengo and his expectations for 2020: "I believe I have a lot to offer by returning to Imperadores, given my experience in American football as an athlete and coach. I hope to help the younger players and contribute to the coaching staff to improve the team's performance. I'm very competitive and hope to bring that energy to the team along with my experience. With that, combined with the talent of the team's athletes, everything is set to be a success."
Rômulo Ramos also highlighted his return to Imperadores in his 18th season of American football: "I'd like to thank Coach Piter for the opportunity to be on the team where I started my career. I'm happy and excited to be back at Flamengo, to see great friends again, and eager to get back to training. My expectations are very high. I hope to help the already strong squad achieve many victories and championships."
Flamengo Imperadores is awaiting the outcome of the novel coronavirus pandemic before returning to action. For now, the team is advising everyone to stay home and has suspended all training sessions until the situation is under control. The BFA League schedule has already been released, but changes will be made according to the competition's management. The red-and-black team is also participating in the Taça Brasil and the Campeonato Carioca this year.
