The statistics from Flamengo's campaign in the U-17 Rio de Janeiro State Championship are impressive. Undefeated champions, the Red-Blacks won 21 of their 24 matches (drawing the other three), had the best attack in the competition, scoring 96 goals, and also the best defense, conceding only 11 goals. These statistics prove Flamengo's superiority in the competition and justify everyone's excitement about this generation of players born in 1993 and 1994.
The team's coach, Fernando Vanucci, is optimistic about the future of these athletes. He took over the team during the competition and realized he had a strong group under his belt. Therefore, he worked hard with the youngsters, which paid off in the final stretch of the State Championship, when they surprised many by thrashing Vasco 5-1 in the semifinals and reaching the final against Botafogo.
"The team has been together since the beginning of the year and the results are already coming. The rout over Vasco at São Januário has already sparked greater curiosity, but the group really has a lot of quality," he said.
For Vanucci, this generation has everything it needs to emulate other great teams formed in the Rubro-Negro youth ranks. He says they just need to keep working hard and stay grounded.
"Some players came from other teams to strengthen the group, and I believe that if the work continues well, in two years Flamengo could have a very strong generation. One similar to Junior Baiano, Rogério, Marcelinho, Djalminha... We need to be down to earth, humble, and hard working," he concluded.
It's worth remembering that, among other highlights, this generation has two athletes frequently called up to the Brazilian youth teams: Adryan, a midfielder, and Matheus, a striker, son of former player Bebeto.
