Flamengo secured a spot in the final of the Junior Super Cup, held in Barueri, Greater São Paulo, after thrashing Sevilha-ESP 6-0 last Friday at Arena Barueri. But the team's biggest advantage in the competition has been its excellent physical condition.
With a 100% success rate, the red-and-black team played two of its four matches at 12 p.m., all five days apart. Daniel Felix, the juniors' physical trainer, explains the work done with the red-and-black youth squad.
"We arrived a little over a month ago and found a completely heterogeneous group. We started physical recovery work to try to make the squad more homogeneous, and the results are already happening. The players understood the need to work this way, and because of this and other factors, we're in the Super Cup final with four wins in four games," said Daniel Felix.
According to the fitness coach, playing consecutive matches at unusual times was another factor for the coaching staff to overcome.
"We had to adapt to the way the competition was played. But thank God we were able to balance training with the game schedules. We prioritized rest, and interdisciplinary work with the physiotherapists and doctors also helped a lot. We had an adaptation period in Rio because the ideal post-game recovery time is 72 hours. I think that was our biggest advantage," explained Daniel Felix.
With their fitness levels in check, Flamengo has maintained a strong performance throughout the 90 minutes and has decided two matches with late goals. Against Peñarol, the winning goal in a 1-0 victory came in the 44th minute. Against Palmeiras, 2-1, the second goal also came in the final period. The final will be played this Sunday at 12 p.m. against Santos at Arena Barueri.
