It's not just the professional players from Flamengo and Vasco who will face off this weekend. This Saturday, the day before the rivals face off in the 2010 Brazilian Championship, the youth teams of Flamengo and Vasco will play to stay alive in the Octávio Pinto Guimarães Cup. Coming off a victory over Madureira, the team from Gávea hopes to repeat the success and defeat their opponents at 11 a.m. at the Campo Grande training center.
With four points from three rounds, Flamengo can take the lead in Group F if they defeat Vasco soon. Therefore, the players know this derby is even more important and are determined to win. Defender China explains why.
"We're hoping for a win, because besides being a classic against Vasco, which is always important to win, it's a decisive game in the championship. If we win, we'll be close to the top, so our team has no other thought than victory," he explained.
Right-back Alex agrees, saying this is the kind of game every athlete, on both sides, wants to play. Therefore, there's no way he won't be motivated for this match.
"Both teams need the win, it's a derby, and that's why it's going to be great. It's going to be very competitive. And Flamengo and Vasco are always Flamengo and Vasco. Everyone wants to play, no one wants to lose... It's going to be a great game," he summarized.
Flamengo will field the following players: Cesar, Alex, Marlon, Matheus, and Jorbison; Frauches, Luiz Antônio, João Vitor, and Guilherme; and Carlyle and Dudu. It's worth noting that the final-year players from the youth team, such as midfielder Saba and defender Henrique, who were part of Flamengo's U-23 squad, are not competing in the competition.
