In the second leg of the quarterfinals of the Brazilian Under-20 Championship, Mengão beat Vasco 3-0 on Tuesday afternoon (26), in Gávea. Showing their power of reaction, the Garotos do Ninho managed to reverse the result of the first leg and secured their place in the semifinals of the competition.
The game
Needing to win by two goals to advance, Flamengo began by pressuring Vasco's attacking play. The first good opportunity came just two minutes in. Thiaguinho won the ball back at the edge of the box, dribbled past his marker, and shot, but the goalkeeper saved it. In the 10th minute, Lázaro received the ball inside the box, fired a cross-shot, and the ball went wide.
The red-and-black team exchanged passes in the attacking half, looking for space to score. While creating chances in attack, the "Garotos do Ninho" (Nest Boys) created some space for the Cruzmaltino team to counterattack. In the 29th minute, Mengão opened the scoring! After a corner kick, Cleiton won the aerial battle and headed it firmly into the net: 1-0. "Mais Querido" (The Most Beloved) went into halftime ahead, with just one more goal remaining to advance to the next round without needing a penalty shootout.
In the second half, Rubro-Negro continued to play more aggressively, exchanging passes in the attacking half. In the 9th minute, Lázaro passed to Matheus França, who fired a powerful shot over the bar. In the final stretch, the game became quite tight in midfield, with plenty of back-and-forth on both sides.
Then, in the 41st minute, Mengão scored the goal they needed to secure qualification, and it came from the feet of the red-and-black gem. Matheus França received the ball in midfield and took a powerful shot to extend the lead: 2-0.
Two minutes later, the brilliant Matheus França scored again. After a counterattack, the ball was crossed into the box, the defender tried to clear it, but the red-and-black number 11 found the back of the net, sealing the victory and qualification for the Mais Querido to the semifinals of the Brazilian Under-20 Championship: 3-0.
Now, Rubro-Negro will face São Paulo in the semifinal.
