Balance and few incisive attacking plays prevailed throughout most of the match. However, in the 41st minute of the second half, Resende scored the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Flamengo, in the sixth round of the Rio U-20 Cup, on Saturday afternoon (19), at the Gávea Stadium. David scored the only goal of the match.
On the 170-kilometer journey from Resende to Rio de Janeiro, the team from the southern Fluminense city experienced problems with their bus, which stopped due to mechanical failure in the state capital, at the entrance to the Rebouças Tunnel, which connects Rio's North Zone to the South Zone. Flamengo provided its own bus, which left Gávea and returned to the game venue with the opposing team in time to avoid delays.
The first half was relatively uneventful in terms of scoring chances. Flamengo should have had the initiative, but Resende's defense managed to keep up, even blocking two shots from the Flamengo forwards. On two occasions, Resende created a threat, one of which was a shot by Wiliver.
Already looking at the next match of the Brazilian Under-20, next Wednesday (23), against Grêmio, right-back Wanderson and midfielders Rafael Couto and Jorge Mora entered the field to gain minutes, with scheduled substitutions. Wanderson played only in the first half and gave way to Luiz Phellipe. Couto and Mora left in the 15th minute of the second half for the entries of Fred and David, respectively.
Early in the second half, Resende began pressing forward and nearly opened the scoring with a move down the left, which the defense cleared for a corner. In the 18th minute, the Rio de Janeiro team once again came back on the attack with a dangerous shot from Paulo Vitor. The red-and-black team responded with two attacks, which ended with Felipe Lima's shot wide.
In the final stretch of the match, in the 41st minute, when the game seemed destined for a goalless draw, Resende capitalized on a ball stolen by defender Johnny, and number 19 David made no mistake, scoring the winning goal. Rubro-Negro still tried to press late on, but were unable to equalize. The Resende players celebrated wildly after the final whistle.
