Defeat on penalties knocks Flamengo out of the Brazilian Under-20 Championship

After drawing 1-1 in the quarterfinals of the Brazilian Under-20 Championship, Flamengo was defeated 4-3 on penalties and is out of the competition. The match was played this Wednesday (30), at the Luso Brasileiro Stadium, on Ilha do Governador. Pedro Leão scored the red-black goal.
Bruno Pivetti's team created plenty of chances, especially in the second half, but failed to convert their dominance into goals. The team's next match will be its debut in the U-20 Carioca Championship, against Portuguesa, next Saturday at 15 p.m., again at Luso Brasileiro.
The game
Cruzeiro started by pressing the ball out and came out strong less than a minute in. Number 10 Rhuan shot on goal, but Iago saved. In Flamengo's first dangerous attack, Joshua took a shot from outside the box, but the goalkeeper saved it in the 8th minute.
In another good chance for the Minas Gerais team, Lucas Belucco shot to the right of Lucas Furtado in the 11th minute. Then, from a direct corner kick, the ball hit the crossbar in the 13th minute. The answer came in the next play, with a cross from Shola from the left that Pedro Leão almost scored. In the 16th minute, Lorran took a corner kick and Iago headed over.

The second half couldn't have started better: just one minute in, Joshua won the ball from the defender and passed it to Pedro Leão, who struck hard, unmarked, to tie the match. In the fourth minute, Daniel Sales crossed, and Lorran headed just wide of the post.
Flamengo's attack forced the goalkeeper to work twice in the 14th minute, with shots from Joshua and then Shola. Cruzeiro nearly scored in the 27th minute, with a free kick deflected off the wall, which just missed the right post. Cruzeiro retaliated with Lorran, who hit the post after a scuffle in the box.
Flamengo nearly scored their second goal after a steal. Felipe Teresa took a shot, but the ball went wide in the 34th minute. Another good chance came in the 36th minute, when Lorran finished, but the defense saved. Having played better throughout the second half, Flamengo failed to capitalize on their chances, and the semifinal spot went to a penalty shootout.
Pedro, Iago, and Wanderson scored from the penalty shootout, while Lorran and Guilherme didn't convert. Lucas Furtado made a save, but the score remained 4-3 for the Minas Gerais team.
