This Wednesday (February 05.02th), at 16 p.m., Marcelo Buarque will make his debut as Flamengo's under-20 coach. He was a member of the club's staff from 1987 to 1999. During that time, he was the coach of the children's team; the physical trainer for the children's, youth, and junior teams; and the assistant coach for the youth and senior teams. Marcelo returns to Gávea excited to uncover new talent.
"I hope to continue the club's philosophy that Flamengo produces great talent at home. I will strive to continue the work being done here, without ever giving up on that philosophy. The development of athletes must focus not only on technical quality, but also on their development as people," explained the new coach.
His debut in the new role will be against Boavista, at the Nivaldo Pereira Stadium, in a game valid for the sixth round of the Taça Guanabara, the first round of the Campeonato Carioca.
"Against Boavista, I hope we win. In every age group, especially the under-20s, Flamengo must always go in to win. In any competition, whether national or regional, they need to fight to be champions. Of course, the youth teams serve to develop players, but we can't develop losers. We have to develop quality athletes and winners," said Marcelo Buarque.
The new coach takes over Flamengo, which sits fifth in the Guanabara Cup, just one spot behind the group that advances to the semifinals. With eight points from five games, Flamengo is only four points behind leaders Nova Iguaçu.
