Flamengo dominated the game, had more possession, and played the kind of football everyone expected, but couldn't convert their superiority into goals and ended up defeated by Santos in the penalty shootout of the Eurofarma U-19 Super Cup final this Sunday (August 01.08st) in Barueri. The São Paulo goals were scored by Guilherme and Tiago Alves. Galhardo, with a free kick, scored both of Flamengo's goals. The second came in the 47th minute of the second half, sending the match to penalties, where Carlyle failed to convert the penalty, and the São Paulo team won 5-4.
It's worth remembering that Flamengo finished second despite not losing a single game in the competition. The team qualified with the best campaign in the first phase and achieved a 100% record in the tournament until reaching the final, defeating Peñarol, Porto, Palmeiras, and Sevilla. Galhardo, captain and scorer of Flamengo's goals in the final, was the team's top scorer in the Super Cup with five goals. Eliabe and Dudu scored three.
"It was a final between great teams, I thank God and the group for their dedication, but it wasn't the case this time. We have to keep working," said Galhardo after the match.
Unexpected goal
What we saw in the opening minutes was a true attack-versus-defense game. Flamengo displayed their skillful, fast-paced style of play, which led them to the final, while Santos, due to their numerous absences, played a defensive lineup and relied solely on counterattacks. But despite their greater possession and dominance of the match, Flamengo only managed to scare the opposing goalkeeper in the 30th minute, with a beautiful shot from outside the box by João Vitor.
Needing to react, the Santos coach decided to make changes to his team, bringing on striker Tiago Alves to add more movement to his attacking system. The São Paulo team improved, and in the 37th minute, Santos opened the scoring with a header from defender Guilherme on a free kick from the number 7. It was the first time Flamengo had fallen behind in the Eurofarma Super Cup.
Tie in race
Immediately after halftime, Rubro-Negro coach Paulo Henrique made a change he'd made frequently in previous matches: he took off midfielder Eliabe and brought on right-back Alex, pushing Rafael Galhardo forward to create plays. The change also paid off. Six minutes into the second half, Galhardo leveled the score with a beautiful free kick.
The match then reverted to its first-half form, with Flamengo taking the initiative and Santos trying to capitalize on counterattacks. And, again, as in the first half, despite Flamengo's dominance, it was Santos who scored. In a solo play, Tiago Alves slipped past two Flamengo defenders and slotted the ball past Cesar to make it 2-1 in the 32nd minute.
Santos retreated further, and Flamengo had no choice but to launch an attack. Relying more on grit than technique, the red-and-blacks sought an equalizer at every cost. And Galhardo's star shone again. In the 47th minute, with another free kick from the edge of the box, he was rewarded for everything he had done in the match and in the championship, scoring the equalizer that sent the decision to penalties.
Penalty shootout
In the so-called penalty lottery, Flamengo and Santos's penalty takers performed well, but the São Paulo team prevailed. Carlyle missed the Flamengo team's third penalty, and Santos won 5-4, thus becoming champions of the Eurofarma Super Cup.
