Flamengo scores first, but suffers away defeat in the Brazilian Under-20 Championship
Team is defeated 2-1 by Palmeiras on the synthetic grass of Arena Barueri
By Communication - inIn the first match after the U-20 Libertadores final, won by Flamengo in March, Rubro-Negro took the lead, but suffered a comeback and was defeated 2-1 by Palmeiras, on Monday night (26), at Arena Barueri. The match opened the 12th round of the U-20 Brazilian Championship. Pedro Leão scored Fla's goal.
The game started hotly on Barueri's artificial turf, and it was Flamengo who nearly scored less than a minute into the match, following a quick throw-in from Gusttavo to Rafael Couto, who fired wide to the right of goalkeeper Kauan Lima. Palmeiras retaliated in the second minute, firing over the bar, and threatened again a minute later when Thalys, left alone with Nanetti, attempted a chip, but the Flamengo goalkeeper saved without a problem.
Palmeiras had more possession and pressed. They even had a few chances, but it was Flamengo who opened the scoring with Pedro Leão. Shola crossed from the right, Gusttavo controlled it inside the box, and the number 9 scored, scoring his 14th goal of the season. The São Paulo team continued to try to build momentum in attack.
After a shot hit the post and two goals rightly disallowed for offside, Palmeiras tied the match. Gusttavo awarded a penalty to Gilberto, which Thalys converted in the 45th minute. Three minutes later, the referee ended the first half.
The second half started much the same as the first. Flamengo made the opposing goalkeeper work within the first minute, with a play by Shola and Rayan Lucas. Only this time, Thalys scored Palmeiras' second goal in the 1th minute. Soon after, Wanderson played a one-two with Mora and fired over the bar. Leading on the scoreboard, Flamengo continued to pose a threat and nearly scored in the 5th minute. Leo Nannetti saved both shots.
Flamengo fought hard at Arena Barueri, but couldn't maintain possession for long, ultimately allowing Palmeiras to play more easily. Flamengo stepped up their game and even had a good opportunity with Wanderson in the 34th minute. The opposing defender blocked the shot and sent it out for a corner. Before the end of the game, Wanderson still had a good chance, but was flagged for offside.
