On the afternoon of last Saturday (02/08), at the Gávea social headquarters, Fluminense beat Flamengo 1-0 in a game valid for the seventh round of the Guanabara Cup, which is the first round of the Carioca Junior Championship. Despite the negative result, Mais Querido, fourth placed, remains in the classification zone that leads to the semifinals of the round.
"It was a match we knew would be tough. Fluminense is an older team, and some of the youngsters had come down from the senior ranks for the match. It was an even game, but they had a chance and scored. Then we had two chances to equalize and come back, and we fought until the end, but it didn't happen," said Fluminense coach Marcelo Buarque.
The game against Fluminense was only Flamengo's second under new coach Marcelo Buarque. Despite the setback, he expressed satisfaction with certain aspects. "Within the approach we want, we've seen improvement. And that's how derbies are: they're more competitive matches, and it doesn't make much difference whether they're at home or away. The most important thing is that the team, within the framework we've worked on, developed our requirements well and understood our game dynamics very well. After a week of training, the response was good," he explained.
In the eighth round of the Guanabara Cup, Flamengo will face another classic. Next Saturday (February 15.02), at 16:30 pm, in Itaguaí, the red-black juniors will face Vasco.
