The Flamengo under-16 soccer team has won another youth title: the Guilherme Embry Tournament, now in its 5th edition. Flamengo secured the early title with a 2-1 victory over Fluminense on Tuesday morning (October 13.10) in Gávea. In addition to first place, Flamengo also became the competition's top scorer thanks to Fabrício Ferreira's nine goals. Fabão and Markinhos scored the winning goals.
After a home and away match, Flamengo won the second round and reached the final triangle alongside Fluminense, the first round champion, and Botafogo, the team with the most points after the first round winners. With three wins in their first three games, Flamengo could no longer be overtaken and lifted the title with a round to spare.
The task of leading this group fell to Marcio Torres, assistant coach to Gilmar Popoca in the under-17 team. Marcinho, as he's known, has already won the São Paulo Cup and three times the OPG Tournament, but he had never won a title as a coach. The title was a first not only for Flamengo, but also for the coach, who took on the responsibility of bringing the trophy to Gávea.
"This year they effectively gave me the mission of bringing this title to the club. It was a dream of the board to win the Guilherme Embry Tournament, which honors one of Flamengo's biggest fans. (Carlos) Noval told me: 'Look, I want the title.' And we brought it," said Marcinho, emotionally, about the youth team director's request.
"The title belongs to the group, which is excellent. It belongs to Gilmar (Popoca), who helped us a lot... It belongs to the entire coaching staff, from the other categories, who were always present, to the interns, who were always with us, whether through work or with the fans. It belongs to the management, who supported us and believed in the work. It belongs to the players, who played together, without vanity, without pride. They fought for each other," concluded Marcio.
A true Flamengo fan and a benefactor of the Mais Querido, Guilherme Embry watches every Flamengo game, whether at Gávea or when the youth team players play away. And it was no different in the tournament that bears his name. From the very first match, Guilherme was on the sidelines. In the final, he was able to witness the unprecedented title win up close.
"It's an honor for me to see this title inside Gávea. I'm a Flamengo supporter and I'm truly happy to see the Mais Querido win this tournament. The coaching staff is of the highest caliber, the players are extraordinary. I'm speechless. I'm very grateful for the work that (Carlos) Noval has been doing at the youth level. Flamengo's current management is doing an extraordinary job," said the honoree.
