Flamengo draws with São Paulo and says goodbye to the Brazilian Under-20 Championship
The boys fought until the end, but were unable to reverse the result of the first leg.
By Paulo Neto - inOn Friday afternoon (5), Flamengo drew 1-1 with São Paulo, in the second leg of the semifinals of the Brazilian Under-20 Championship, in Gávea. The boys needed to win by at least the minimum advantage to take the match to penalties, with the draw, the team says goodbye to the competition.
The game
Flamengo started the game looking to tie the match. In the opening minutes, Thiaguinho received a pass on the right and was fouled. The ball was cleared by the defense. In the fifth minute, the Flamengo team mounted a quick counterattack. Thiaguinho found Lázaro in the box. The Flamengo striker's ball got past the goalkeeper but was cleared before reaching its target.
In the 10th minute, in the best chance of the game so far, Matheus França received a beautiful through ball, beat the defenders with speed and tried to chip the opposing goalkeeper, who made a great save.
While Flamengo was looking for their goal, in the 15th minute, after a corner kick in our favor, the São Paulo team mounted a successful counterattack and Vitinho took advantage to open the score: 0x1.
Flamengo then regained control. In the 16th minute, Thiaguinho took a shot from outside the box, forcing a comfortable save from the opposing goalkeeper. In the 19th minute, Thiaguinho shot again, but this time the ball went over the goal.
At 23, Flamengo once again came close to scoring: Lázaro received the ball inside the box, turned and shot into the corner, but the São Paulo goalkeeper made a good save.
Flamengo pressed São Paulo's ball out, and in the 30th minute, the pressure paid off. Igor intercepted a long ball in the middle of the field and tried it from there – the ball went very close: it would have been a great goal.
In the 33rd minute, Igor fought for another ball and shot from outside the box, which the opposing goalkeeper nearly rebounded. The next minute, Matheus França received the ball in midfield, made a beautiful play, and fed Lázaro in the box, who shot into the back of the net, but the referee had already signaled offside.
In the 36th minute, São Paulo came forward from the right, and after a low shot, Matheus Cunha made a beautiful save. The team still sought a goal in the final minutes of the first half, but the game went into halftime with São Paulo leading 1-0.
In the second half, coach Fabio Matias made two changes. André and Ryan Luka came on for Yuri and Kayke David, respectively. Lázaro was replaced by Pedro Arthur in the opening minutes.
In the 15th minute, after a hard challenge on Igor Jesus, São Paulo midfielder Guilherme was sent off. Flamengo then took the lead in the second half, after a cross from the right ended up with Thiaguinho inside the box, who fired over the bar.
In the 25th minute, from a corner kick on the left, Kayque Soares rose above everyone and headed the ball into the net. Mengão tied the match at Gávea: 1-1.
After the goal, Flamengo went all out in search of a second, which would have sent the match to penalties. In the 26th minute, Marcos Paulo shot from outside the box, but the ball went wide. In the 28th minute, in a great play down the right, Wesley crossed, and the São Paulo defender deflected it into his own net, forcing a great save from the opposing goalkeeper. Flamengo's blitz.
The next minute, Marcos Paulo crossed into the box, and the ball flew past everyone, threateningly. In the 35th minute, after a corner kick, André headed the ball, and it was cleared off the line. In the 39th minute, a cross from the right was straight at goal and nearly caught the opposing goalkeeper off guard, but the goalkeeper recovered and made a great save. It was almost a comeback.
In the final minutes of the match, Flamengo was all over São Paulo's field. The team fought until the end, but couldn't convert the chances they created. With the draw, the boys bid farewell to the Brazilian U-20 Championship.
