Flamengo's youth team is out of contention for the Taça Guanabara title, the first round of the U-20 Rio de Janeiro State Championship. Despite playing at home, having the majority of possession, and creating the best scoring opportunities, Flamengo was unable to overcome América in Gávea. With the 1-0 defeat, coach Armênio Moura's team is four points behind Fluminense, the competition leader and the favorite to win the title.

Wednesday's result left Flamengo in fourth place in the standings, behind Fluminense, Vasco, and Botafogo. In the final round of the championship, next weekend, the Gávea team faces Friburguense away from home. For right-back Rafael Galhardo, the loss was disappointing.

"The team didn't play badly. We did well, but it was a day when nothing went right. We tried, we ran, we kicked, but the ball didn't go in. It happens. Unfortunately, we're out and now we have to think about the Rio Cup," he said.
