Flamengo's first step in the Brazilian Under-20 Championship was on the right foot. On Monday afternoon (December 06.12), the red-and-black youth squad had no trouble beating Guarani 3-0 at the Alfredo Jaconi stadium in Caxias do Sul. With two goals from midfielder Luiz Antônio and one from striker Thomas, who was one of the standout players on the youth team's undefeated Rio de Janeiro championship this year, the team won and convinced right from its debut.
Flamengo is in Group A of the competition, along with Palmeiras, Atlético-MG, Guarani, and Atlético-GO. The team from Gávea's next match is against Palmeiras on Wednesday (December 08.12). The top two teams in the group qualify for the quarterfinals. It's worth noting that Mengão is seeking a first-ever title in the competition.
From the start of the match, coach Paulo Henrique's team dominated. It seemed like it was only a matter of time before Flamengo opened the scoring. It took a while, but when the first goal came, the floodgates flew open. Midfielder Luiz Antônio made it 1-0 in the 30th minute and extended the lead just before halftime in the 42nd.
The second half began with Guarani eager to equalize, but the Campinas Bugre's comeback was short-lived. Just two minutes in, forward Thomas Jaguaribe made a beautiful solo play to score the third. It still seemed like too little. In the 22nd minute, Mateus fired home a free kick and scored a stunning goal: 4-0.
With the result well underway, Paulo Henrique also took the opportunity to test options from his bench, such as youngsters Rafinha and Romário, promoted from the U-17s, who gave the Green and White defense a hard time with their speed. But the score was already sealed, and the advantage remained at four goals.
Flamengo played with Cesar, Alex, Marlon, Mateus and Jorbison; Lorran (Elvis), João Vitor, Maycon (Jorginho) and Luiz Antônio (Muralha); Negueba (Rafinha) and Thomas (Romário).
