After thrashing Guarani and playing superiorly throughout the match, Flamengo showed off the other side of the pitch in the first 45 minutes of Wednesday's (December 08.12) match against Palmeiras. The green and white team pressed hard, had more possession, and made it very difficult for the red and black team to create chances. Negueba's performance was particularly impressive, as he was well-coordinated individually.
Flamengo's two best chances fell to striker Thomaz, who received a good pass on the left side of the box after just two minutes, but couldn't find enough space to finish. He was brought down in the box in the 22nd minute, but a penalty was ultimately not awarded. Palmeiras, for their part, didn't have many chances, but were effective when they did: Francinei received a good ball and fired a powerful shot through Cesar's legs in the 45th minute, making it 1-0 with the final play of the first half.
Coach Paulo Henrique made changes to his lineup during halftime, taking off Lorran and Maycon and bringing on Rafinha and Elvinho. Furthermore, the conversation with the coach roused the Flamengo players, who returned to the field with a different attitude. From the opening minutes, the Red-Blacks dominated the game, but were unable to effectively create scoring chances.
The first real chance came in the 22nd minute, when Elvinho, who entered the box from the left, dribbled past his marker, and shot. The ball hit a Palmeiras defender and hit the crossbar. Soon after, Luiz Antonio's free kick forced the Alviverde goalkeeper to make a fine save.
Flamengo continued to attack, and Palmeiras simply defended. In the 35th minute, after a corner kick from Negueba, Marlon headed the ball unmarked into the right corner, but the Palmeiras goalkeeper made another good save.
The red-and-black pressure continued, and in stoppage time, Negueba nearly scored an Olympic goal. However, Palmeiras held on for the victory, their first in the competition.
The result left Flamengo in second place in their group with three points, ahead of Palmeiras on goal difference. Atlético-MG is the leader with four points.
FLAMENGO – Cesar, Alex (Ricardinho), Marlon, Mateus and Jorbison; Lorran (Elvinho), João Vitor, Maycon (Rafinha) and Luiz Antônio; Negueba and Thomaz (Romário).
