Next Friday (06.12), at 15:30 pm, at the Passo D'Areia Stadium, in Porto Alegre (RS), Flamengo will make its debut in the Brazilian under-20, against Atlético-MG. The Most Beloved is in group B, along with three other clubs, in addition to the Minas Gerais clubs: Náutico, Vitória and Santos.
The competition will run from December 05th to 21st and is promoted, organized, and directed by the Gaucho Football Federation (FGF). Twenty clubs in total are divided into four groups of five members each. Group B, for the Rubro-Negro, is based in Porto Alegre.
In the qualifying round, all teams face each other within their groups in a single round. After all the matches, the top two teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals. If Flamengo advances, they will play their first knockout match against one of the two teams from Group A.
Flamengo's squad sent to the competition is mostly made up of players born in 1994, 95, and 96. However, the core of the starting lineup is made up of the only five players born in 1993 who traveled: Fernando, Dalbert, Fernandinho, Igor Sartori, and Eduardo. Celso Martins, the under-17 coach, leads the group, as Cleber dos Santos, the under-20 coach, remained in Rio focused on preparing the juniors for the São Paulo Cup.
"We hope to take the first step, which is to qualify for the quarterfinals. We're in a very tough group, but we need to finish in the top two. If we advance to the knockout stage, then we'll be able to think about bigger things," explained Celso Martins.
